SCREEN PRINTING DIRECTIONS

Materials

Plastic work surface cover
Squeegee to fit inside the frame
Pins
Sponge
Silkscreen with the design already on it

Sponge for cleaning the mesh when you have finished printing

Fabric, washed and ironed
Rubber gloves
Palette knife or spoon

1: Pin or tape your fabric to your surface. I just use a sheet of plastic over my workbench.

2: The correct technique for producing professional quality prints
is NOT to hold the squeegee at an acute angle, such as you
would with traditional screens. Instead, keep the squeegee at an
angle APPROXIMATELY 70 degrees and use a ‘positive’ NOT heavy pressure across the screen.
See instructions at the bottom of the page.

3: Place the screen on top of a piece of fabric or whatever you are printing onto. Apply paint generously to the squeegee or in the well at the top of the screen. Holding the screen with one hand, drag the squeegee gently across, making sure to spread the paint evenly over the design area.
Hold the squeegee at an angle of approximately 70 degrees. See below.
Keep even pressure across the width of the squeegee to
prevent an uneven spread of paint.
You may have to pull the squeegee across the screen 2 times if it is a heavy design.

4: Lift the frame carefully off the fabric in a hinge action, so as not to smudge the print.

5: When you have finished printing, wash the screen straight away with a sponge and cold water.

6: If you are using Aquatex Opaque Paints, leave the fabric till the paint is dry (approximately 24hrs) Then heat set with a hot dry iron on the wrong side of fabric.

Do not let the paint dry on the screen. When washing out the screens, wash under cold water (not hot) on the rough side of the screen by gently rubbing with a sponge. Don’t let paints dry on the screen.
